Introduction
Electrical insulating matting and sheeting is used in many commercial, industrial and marine environments to offer secondary electrical protection for people working on or near electrical equipment.
The product standard BS921:1976 Rubber mats for electrical purposes, has been used over the last forty years by companies to provide this protection for their employee’s when they may be exposed to electrical hazards.
Over the last twenty years there has been a harmonization of European safety product standards under CENELEC, which has been drafted by technical committee’s made up from European member states including the United Kingdom.
In 1992 IEC produced the first international standard for electrical insulated matting IEC61111:1992 which the UK implemented as a national standard.
In 2006 this was revised by CENELEC.
In 2009 the standard was revised to its current version including in its forward that all conflicting national standards were to be withdrawn by the 1st June 2012, this includes BS921 – Rubber Mats for Electrical Purposes as it is a conflicting standard to IEC61111;2009
is the United Kingdoms current national standard for electrical insulating matting.
